Candles are romantic and cozy, but in the right context, they become sinister. This idea takes an ordinary fixture—a chandelier, a hanging lantern, or even a bare branch suspended from the ceiling—and turns it into something out of a gothic horror film. You will need a collection of white pillar candles, a heat gun or hairdryer, red craft paint mixed with glue, and fake blood made from corn syrup and red dye. Start by letting the candles melt naturally, or use a heat gun to soften the wax until you can bend and drip the edges. Don’t aim for perfection; aim for drips that have frozen mid-flow, like the wax was caught off guard by something terrible.
Once your candles look aged and drooping, coat them with a thin layer of fake blood. Let some of it run down the sides and harden into sticky, glossy rivulets. Place the candles on a rustic chandelier or in glass holders, and then hang small crystal or glass beads from the fixture with fishing wire—when the light catches them, they will look like droplets of frozen blood. Use flickering battery-operated candles (for safety, please skip real fire on anything draped with fabric) and color them with red and amber bulbs. If you want the full effect, add a motion-activated recording of whispered breathing or a low growl hidden near the chandelier. When visitors walk underneath, the candles will flicker, the glass will glisten, and they will feel the sudden, primal instinct to look up and run.
